Special Skills:
I have several great pleasures, writing, teaching, and wallowing in information. I know a variety of literary forms from all angles. I indulge in literature not only because it is my business, but because I love language and words. The other pleasure that I gain from my passionate involvement with words is sharing this interest with others. It doesn't matter whether my students are six or sixty, I feel most alive when I can share the excitement and satisfaction that comes from the ideas that stories and learning can be passed through each student to the next, like an earth tremor.
I have an ability to teach the writing process while instilling in students of all ages the satisfaction and joy that come from this form of defining their worlds. It is the balance of setting high academic expectations and at the same time exposing students to the joy and confidence-building attributes writing can and reading can provide that is the motivating strategy that I use when teaching. I have succeeded with African teachers in Soweto, South Africa, to teenage boys living in shelter care. The most reluctant, the least confident, and the most resentful of student has come to enjoy that pencil in their hand when they write with me.
Awards/Honors:
Flight of the Fisherbird, 2003 Montana Book of the Year honor book.
A Perfect Snow, my Young Adult novel that won the 2003 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Assoc. Award. It is a Junior Library Guild Selection. And an ALA notable trade book for social studies.
